Lincoln Handicap Betting & Odds 2026

The Lincoln Handicap is the traditional season opener of the British Flat racing season. It takes place at Doncaster Racecourse on the final Saturday of March, and it often includes a large field of handicappers. At Boylesports, you can check out the Lincoln Handicap odds and place your bets on the races.

What is the Lincoln Handicap?

Staged on Doncaster’s straight mile course, the Lincoln Handicap is a heritage handicap contest. It is the first big meeting on the British Flat racing calendar, and it includes progressive handicappers from many of the leading stables in the UK and Ireland.

Key Storylines Ahead of the 2026 Running

John and Thady Gosden finished second in the 2025 Flat Trainers’ Championship behind Aidan O’Brien. The father and son pairing will be hoping to get off to a strong start in 2026 to go one place better. Victory in the Lincoln Handicap 2026 will get them off to the perfect possible start in their bid for the title.

No trainer has won the Lincoln Handicap more times than William Haggas. The Somerville Lodge-based handler won the race for a fifth time in 2025 when he saddled Godwinson to victory. The five-year-old gelding may make his seasonal reappearance at Doncaster once again in the 1m heritage handicap.

Two Tempting has been in good form on the all-weather at the back end of 2025. Jonathan Portman’s runner prevailed in a class two handicap at Kempton in November. The six-year-old should arrive fit for his second shot at the race.

The ground leading into the Lincoln Handicap 2026 could dictate which horses remain in the race at the declaration stage. Those looking for good ground will be hoping for a dry spell in Doncaster, while those who prefer testing conditions will be keen for rain to fall ahead of the meeting.

Runners to Watch in the 2026 Lincoln Betting Odds

  1. Godwinson – Won the Lincoln Handicap in 2025, so he is proven over the C&D. He will be bidding to give trainer William Haggas a record-extending sixth success in the race.
  2. Two Tempting – Now rated 100 in the official ratings. He has been in good form on the all-weather during the winter, so he will head to Doncaster fit and ready to go.
  3. Zariela – Improving filly who was second in the Listed Fleur De Lys EBF Fillies’ Stakes on her last start. Now rated as high as 96 in the official ratings.
  4. Oliver Show – Runner-up in 2025. He has fared well in his three appearances at Doncaster. This versatile gelding is likely to be ridden by in-form jockey Billy Loughnane.

How Does the Draw and Conditions Affect the Odds

The ground at Doncaster’s straight course can have a big impact on what becomes the best draw in the Lincoln Handicap. In recent years, a higher draw has been more advantageous, with 15 of the last 22 winners being drawn in stall nine or higher, meaning the odds are likely to be in their favour.

When the ground is soft or heavy, the lower numbers at Doncaster have fared well, with the better ground coming on the inside rail, especially in larger fields like the Lincoln Handicap.

Betting Trends to Consider for This Year’s Race

11 of the last 20 renewals of the Lincoln Handicap have been won by four-year-olds, the most popular winning age in that period.

Since 2000, 11 of the 25 winners have carried less than nine stone on their backs, which indicates horses at the bottom end of the handicap range have had a lot of success. The horse with the most weight on their back to prevail in that period was Babodana in 2004 with 9st 10lb.

Only six of the last 25 winners of the Lincoln have gone off as favourites for the race. 14 of those 25 winners have been double figures in the horse racing betting, with the biggest priced winner in that period being 33/1.

15 of the last 22 winners of the Lincoln have been drawn in stall nine or higher, while 10 of the last 22 winners have been rated between 95-100 in the official ratings.
